Looking at Zappos today, a rule that has been jangling around in my head became crystalized. Here it is:
If ever you find yourself describing a pair of shoes in the following way: "they are like ______, but they ______," don't buy them!
As in, they are like maryjanes, but they are sneakers:
Or, they are like sneakers, but they are flip-flops:
Or, they are like flip-flops, but they are boots:
Or, they are like loafers, but they are sort of like clogs (in fact, I think the whole category of slides violates the rule!):
Or, the virtually inexplicable, they are like flip-flops, but they have tube socks attached:
While I salute your premise, and love the trajectory (though the slides could potentially trade with the flipboots), I am thinking . . . creamsicle sneakerflats! Where are they!

I knew you were going to mention those!!! I do love those sneakerflats, and, in fact, I have a new pair of sneakerflats that really violate the rule. So, okay, maybe, on occasion a hybrid shoe is okay.

I think I might have nightmares about those flip-flop boot things...

Wow... one has to ask where and with what you might consider wearing those flip-flop/tube sock things, ever. And wouldn't the socks get dirty?
Urgh.

These are amusing, but the sheer number of possibilities on Zappos wears me out. I end up only using them when I know EXACTLY what I want and either can't find it in a store or discover it's overpriced in a store. And it's a pity that I don't browse and discover wild shoes like the ones you've posted above, but life is short. I am glad you have given me a glimpse of the more unusual options, though!

Julia - LOVED this and agreed entirely with the concept, though sad to say I adore the flip flop/boot extravaganza. Oh well. Just wrote about it and linked on our blog! xoxo Jess

I would wear the filpflopsneaker thingys, because they get me out of the not-quite-followed rule of no flipflops at school.
